“For someone looking to become a personal trainer, what are the best certifications to get?”

Foremost, congratulations for making the decision and commitment to become a certified personal trainer! If done correctly, this is a job that is fueled by passion, knowledge, and patience for your craft and your work with each individual client.

However, while knowing that you want to have a career in fitness, it can become incredibly overwhelming in which certification is correct for you and the business you’d wish to obtain.

There are a multitude of specialization certifications to receive that can benefit specific populations such as: pre- and post-natal, seniors, and youths. However, it’s best to become a certified personal trainer first before receiving these other specialization certifications.

While there are many credited certifications out there to choose from, and while initial costs for your personal trainer certification, cost for recertifying, and length in achieving your certification can all be in challenging factors in your decision; I have enclosed four prestigious organizations that could be considered the “best” certification for you to get depending again on your specific goals and interests.

National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

nasmFor over 20 years, NASM has certified thousands of trainers, and has sustained pride for their certified personal trainer (CPT) by requiring each student to learn the very most on anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and human physical movement based upon science. Additionally, NASM honors themselves on assessments based upon proper function and extensive program design for each and every client to help reduce injuries. With a tag line such as, “Change your life by changing the lives of others,” NASM CPT is a tremendous certification to learn the science and case studies of the human body. Furthermore, NASM even lists job board postings on their website for available personal trainer positions. NASM lists on their website that the U.S. Department of Labor expects a 13% growth in the next decade for their certified personal trainers. NASM offers exams and textbooks for home study, online materials, and live workshops.
