About the USPA
With over 1000 graduates, worldwide, it’s message of excellence in Pilates Certification remains legendary, and is the ONLY program based on the exclusive ownership of the Joseph Pilates Archives and the copyrighted Teacher Training Manual, written in collaboration with one of the most renowned, “Pilates Elders,” considered Joseph Pilates’ protégé’ and one of his most highly respected Master Trainers.
The Authentic Pilates ™ taught in this Program remains the purest form of Pilates today, and honors the legacy of Joseph Pilates’ teachings, mind/body/spirit philosophy, and this fitness pioneer’s commitment to promoting and preserving vibrant health, improving and extending quality of life though an unwavering dedication to excellence.
Since 2006, this legendary Certification Program and complimentary Continuing Education Seminars and the groundbreaking Joseph H. Pilates Archival Seminars have been overseen and managed exclusively under the auspice of the United States Pilates Association ®, LLC (U.S.P.A ®). *
The USPA Mission
The U.S.P.A.® intends to extend its resources and mission into the areas of Teacher Training and Certification and Continuing Education in Authentic Pilates ™ and to spread Authentic Pilates™ Education into the public and private sectors.
In the area of Teacher Training and Teacher Education, the U.S.P.A.® will promote the New York Pilates Studio® Teacher Certification Program at U.S.P.A.® Training Centers throughout the United States. The New York Pilates Studio® Teacher Certification Program, started in November 1992, is the first. and oldest Pilates professional training program in the world. With over 1000 graduates, worldwide, its message of excellence in training and education stands tall. The copyrighted Teacher Certification Manual used exclusively by this Program was created to ensure a comprehensive formula for translation of the Authentic Pilates™ system of exercises to the student or “apprentice”, and it has remained the hallmark of the New York Pilates Studio® Teacher Certification program today. U.S.P.A.® principals David Freeman, Brett Howard, and Catherine Cuzzone collectively possess over 30 years experience in Authentic Pilates™. The U.S.P.A.® will also conduct Continuing Educational and Joseph H. Pilates Archival Seminars using exclusive footage and photographs taken from the Joseph Pilates Archives.
In addition to Teacher Certification and Education, the U.S.P.A.® is working on new outreach programs which will include public schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and specialized programs for the elderly, disabled, and learning challenged populations. Joseph Pilates envisioned that his methodology would benefit people of all ages and all body types.
The U.S.P.A.® will be broadening its resources by engaging other well known Pilates aficionados from all over the world to collaborate on new and exciting material to blend with our existing format.
The U.S.P.A.® honors the legacy of Joseph Pilates’ teachings, mind/body wellnesss philosophy, and is committed to preserving and promoting his original message of vibrant health, quality of life, and his unwavering dedication to excellence.
Teacher Certification Overview
The New York Pilates Studio® Teacher Certification process consists of two phases: academic study through the System Workshops and experiential training through the Apprenticeship Program. Any individual who meets the entry requirements may start the Program at any time.
Phase I : The System Workshops are designed to teach the philosophical, technical, and pedagogical aspects of The Authentic Pilates™ professional training program. Students are taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced-level movements for each apparatus. The movements are demanding, and you must be in good physical condition to participate. You must also be relatively active with decent flexibility and some sense of your body.
- System Workshops : Offered in two different formats, applicants choose one of the following formats to apply for:
- Monthly Workshops : Consists of three different courses, which are each three to five days long, covering the Beginner System, Intermediate System and Advanced System.
- 12 Day Intensive : A seminar completed in 12 consecutive days covering the Beginner through Advanced System material.
Phase II : The Apprentice Program. This program requires a total of 600 apprenticeship hours with an Authentic Pilates™ certified instructor at a Certification Center or Authentic Pilates™ Studio. The Apprenticeship is required for all formats.
Phase 1 (First 200 hrs): Observation & Practice
Phase 2 (Second 200 hrs): Assisting an Authentic Pilates™ Certified Instructor.
Phase 3 (Third 200 hrs): Teaching solo under the supervision of an Authentic Pilates™ Certified Instructor.
Exams are given at the completion of each phase. Progression through each phase develops your teaching skills and is completed according to your own schedule and that of the center. The apprenticeship must be finished in one year. Permission to extend an apprenticeship beyond one year can be given at the sole discretion of the U.S.P.A
